Helping Shelter Pets: PetSmart Donates Food To Animals In Need
by Robbi Hess
As a pet parent to a houseful of rescues, I understand the important work that shelter operators undertake and the monumental task of keeping the cats and dogs in shelters fed and healthy. I know I cannot feed every pet nor can I adopt every animal who is residing in a shelter, but if I can do more by buying food and helping feed an animal in a shelter, you know I am committing to buying my pets’ food at my local PetSmart!
In celebration of its thirtieth anniversary, PetSmart is launching its Buy a Bag, Give a Meal™ program. For every bag of dog or cat food purchased online and at all its stores across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, PetSmart will donate a meal to a pet in need served by pet shelters, animal welfare organizations and food banks. PetSmart anticipates donating more than 60 million meals as a result of this program that kicked off March 1 and runs until December 31, 2017. Doing My Part For Shelter Pets
I write fulltime, donate food and supplies to my local shelter and help a shelter in the North Country with its social media and help them get pets into their forever homes. I wish I had time to do more. I wish I had money to donate more frequently. Now, though PetSmart has made it easier for me to donate to shelter pets by doing what I typically do — buy food for my cats and dogs! What?! Yes, for every bag of food I buy from PetSmart — in store or online — the company has committed to donating a meal to a pet in need. Now, just by doing what I do — buying food for my dogs — I can “afford” to donate more frequently to a shelter without breaking my family budget.
This video perfectly illustrates how you, by simply buying food and feeding your dogs or cats, can help a pet who you may never meet enjoy a delicious meal. What could be easier?
Helping Shelter Pets In Need
I’ve spoken with people who feel the cause of “helping shelter pets” is a mountain too high for them to climb. I tell them, “you can’t change the life of all shelter pets, but you could potentially change the life of one shelter pet, why wouldn’t you”? This program is one that is Hess-pet approved and helps remove the idea that “my contribution isn’t really making a difference” because it is!
