Pet Calendar: Deaf Dog Awareness ~ Hand Signs Deaf Dog Owners Need To Know

September 18-24, 2016 is Deaf Dog Awareness Week and we reached out to deaf dog owners and lovers and experts in the pet community — Bernard Lima-Chavez and Christina Lee. They shared some of their favorite Deaf Dog posts with us. We will be sharing these posts throughout the week to help raise awareness of the beauty and uniqueness of these pets.deaf dog awareness

Bernard, of Dog and His Boy, wrote a post that showed the five hand signs every deaf dog owner needs to know. Bernard shares that “living with a deaf dog can be terrifying, especially if you’ve never met one before.” He helps remove the “fear” by offering these tips to deaf dog owners or potential deaf dog owners.

The hand signs he shares include:

  1. Watch me
  2. Sit
  3. Directional training
  4. No release stay
  5. Thumbs up
