Sharing my life with three cats means that in my home EVERY day is cat “month.” In fact my cats would be more than a little offended to think there is a specific month or even a specific day set aside to honor and worship them and their catness. They ask for, and receive, my attention when they ask for it and even those times when they aren’t!

If you have a cat you know what loving companions they are. They aren’t always as aloof as they are portrayed, but they are particular about how they want to be petted, picked up and catered to.

December Pet Calendar: National Cat Lovers Month

national cat monthEver wondered how you can celebrate cats during National Cat Month and beyond? I have some ideas!

Adopt a cat. If you have space in your home, adopt a cat from a shelter. So many shelters and rescues are overrun with cats who are seeking homes. Stop by your local shelter, spend some time with the cats and kittens there and open your house and your heart to a cat or kitten in need.

Volunteer at a shelter. If you simply can’t adopt a cat or kitten, volunteer at a shelter. You can scoop litter boxes. Cuddle cats or kittens. Take some photos of the adoptable cats and share them on your social media pages. Call your local shelter and ask what they have on their shelter wish list and make a donation to help the cats who are waiting for their forever homes.

Love on your cat(s). In the crush of a busy day and your busy life, your cats may be craving your attention. Take a moment and sit with your cat. Stroke her silky fur. Listen to her rumbling purr. Grab one of her favorite toys and play a game of fetch. Buy her a new scratching post or a new toy. Science has shown that the act of petting a dog or a cat can lower your blood pressure and alleviate your stress — petting a cat is better than medication, right?!

How will you celebrate cats this month and every day? We’d love to know and we’d love to see photos of your beautiful cat!
