Dog Rescue Stories: Adoptable Jake Deserves the Perfect Forever Home!

By Jarissa Aquinde, Positively Woof Rescue and Adoption Story Editor

Jake is a three year old (approximately) Pointer/Pittie mix. He was a stray who ended up at the Coachella Valley Animal Campus in Thousand Palms, California in March 2016. He was transferred to the Riverside Animal Shelter (see video of him at the shelter below) in early April, where he stayed until he was rescued on May 27, 2016 by Tammye Schillinger of 2 Crue Rescue in Riverside.

Jake has had three different foster moms. His first foster mom loved him, but it was always just a temporary stay, as she had to travel. He was with his second foster mom for three months. He’s a happy, sweet, loving, playful boy. He loves long walks, rolling in the grass, belly rubs, McDonald’s hamburgers and riding in the car! He gets along well with other dogs, both big and small (he went to doggie day care every day when he was with his second foster mom) and he could be good with cats, with the right training and a slow introduction. He is also great with children, and knows he has to be gentle when around them.In August, Jake came down with what was thought to be kennel cough, but when it wasn’t cleared up by antibiotics, the vet recommended a heart worm test, which was positive. Jake and his second foster mom were referred to VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital, where a team of veterinary specialists devised a treatment plan for him. Because of the size, the number of worms he had, and his high activity level, it was decided that Jake first undergo a procedure in which the doctors would extract as many worms as possible from him. Then he would undergo the standard heartworm treatment, consisting of a series of shots to break up the remaining worms. He came through the procedure well, and then had to move in with his third and current foster mom, Vi, so he could be monitored full time while undergoing the rest of his treatment. Jake had a complication with an incision that became infected but he tested negative for new heartworms at the end of 2016. Next month, the doctors will test for the presence of any remaining mature worms and, if the test is negative as expected, he will get a clean bill of health! Jake has been through a lot, and while he is extremely loved by all his foster moms and supporters, he deserves to find the perfect forever home! He is currently being fostered in Oceanside, California and is available for meet and greets anywhere in the Southern California area. Jake is about 55lbs, is potty trained, and up to date on all shots!
