Dog Rescue Stories: Max the “Jackshund” Just Celebrated His 19th Birthday!!!

By Jarissa Aquinde, Positively Woof Rescue and Adoption Story Editor
max-featured-2Kathleen went to Tierheim-Berndshof (a local rescue center in Germany) to search for a furbaby to adopt. That’s when she spotted a little, short legged dog. A cheekly, little Dachsund mix named Max! He was pushed to the back of the kennel, while the taller dogs all gathered to the front. Kathleen was immediately smitten and asked shelter staff about him. Kathleen took Max home that day. He was about three years old and was found as a stray with burned paws. Without looking much into his breed beforehand, and not knowing much about his past, Kathleen didn’t know what she had gotten herself into. He had all sort of issues to overcome. He had allergies, didn’t do well on his dog food, would run off and he went after other dogs. However, with lots of patience, education and love, Max overcame everything. He even started to learn basic commands, such as sit, down and stay!max-2When Kathleen moved to the U.K. in 2002, she had to leave him behind to live with her father for a little while. The plan was to bring him over after one year, but her father got very attached to him and asked if Max could live with him permanently. She agreed, and he stayed there for nine years.  Then, after his fur-sibling passed, he started having separation anxiety when he was home alone. Kathleen’s father called her and said he tried everything, but he kept howling and the neighbors were complaining.

Max flew over from Hamburg to Heathrow at the age of fourteen to live with Kathleen again. She could finally spend time with him and teach him some new tricks!  He also now has a rescue sister, six year old Brandy (an Irish Setter / Springer Spaniel mix), who was adopted from a rescue centre in West Sussex.max-and-brandy
At fifteen years old, Max passed his Good Citizen Gold test and became the first Dachshund Trick Dog Champion! He really enjoys trick training and has improved so much so late in life. He’s won many prizes at local dog shows and was even the main character in a short film, starring alongside actor Ewen Macintosh.

Kathleen set up his Facebook page for others to enjoy him.  He has incredible fans from all over the world who sent him presents and cards for his NINETEENTH birthday!!  Max lost his hearing about a year ago and is partially blind, but is living life to the fullest!!max-colage
