By Jarissa Aquinde, Positively Woof Rescue and Adoption Story Editor In November 2013, MaryAnn went to the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter to look at the dogs available for adoption, but she wasn’t ready to adopt quite yet. It was the holiday season and she was working in retail, so she wouldn’t have the time to dedicate to a new furry family member. When MaryAnn arrived, shelter staff asked what she was looking for. She said she wanted a female Pit Bull type dog, but staff felt that they had the perfect match for her. They brought Tyson (formally known as ‘Vegas’) out into the visiting room. MaryAnn crouched down on the floor to pet him, and he climbed into her lap and nuzzled his head into her sweater. She left that day with her heart broken that she couldn’t have him, and she reconsidered 24 hours later when shelter staff told her he was already on hold for someone else.

MaryAnn cried and cried, and then called her dad and asked him to go down to the shelter to try to adopt him for her. “Do whatever you have to do” were her exact words! When he arrived at the shelter, the gentleman that matched MaryAnn and Tyson had a feeling that she’d be back and actually put him on hold for her. The rest was history!

Tyson was emaciated at 32lbs when he found his forever home. Thanks to love, affection and a very healthy diet, he’s a healthy 70 lbs!
